FAQS How Much Water

How much water?

A very common question regarding the use of evaportive coolers is "How much water will the cooler use?"

The easy answer, and not trying to be funny, is "As much as it needs".

KuulAire evaporative coolers cool air by evaporating water. As water evaporates, it is no longer avaialble to cool the air and will eventually run out.  Depending on the ambient conditions the evaporation process can vary.  The hotter and drier the air, the faster the water will evaporate.  The cooler or more humid the air, the less water will evaporate.

As the fan output increases in the KuulAire line, so does the water reservoir. As more air moves through the unit, more water may be evaporated.  A general rule, however, is that a reservoir of water in any KuulAire unit should last 3-4 hours.  Of course the amount of water evaported is subject to heat, humidity, and air flow, but 3-4 hours should be a safe bet for any model.

There are scientific formulas available if you have to know exactly how much water will evaporate, but the results will suprisingly fall within the range mentioned above.

A good example would be that if a cooler has a 6 gallon reservoir and will evaporate this amount over 3-4 hours, one may infer that the cooler will evaporate 1.5-2 gallons of water per hour.
